PROJECTS

Behind the Scenes

G.i. hospital

G.I. Hospital is an anti-war dark comedy that was created and written by Jonny Lewis. Jonny came to Cool Town about animating the project 5 years ago. We began the project but ended up having to postpone it. It wasn't until summer/fall of 2015 that Jon reconnected with us to relaunch the project. G.I. Hospital is currently in production and we are having a blast with this collaboration! This is a commissioned project and is our first time working with a new material: silicone. *UPDATE* As of February 2018, G.I. Hospital has circulated a number film festivals across America and has picked up some pretty nifty animation awards! We are proud and humbled to be a part of such a crowd-pleasing project.

Constantine - John Con Noir: "trash" ep. 1

constantine claymation

"John Con Noir"  is a Constantine claymation for the television show Constantine starring Matt Ryan. Its character, John Constantine, is from DC Comics' Hellblazer. The sets, puppets and props were designed, fabricated and built by Carol Rasaphangthong and Jennifer Kim - who were also the animators on John Con Noir. The graffiti art in the alley set was done by artist, Amy Tanaka, who occassionally, like several other artists and creatives, lend their special skills and talents to Cool Town projects.

"Constantine John Con Noir EP.1 "Trash" was featured on DC Comics' website and DC Entertainment's official YouTube channel. It has been mentioned on several blogs and websites such as ChannelSuperhero.com and others alike. It is a property of Warner Bros. and currently lives on DC Comics' website and can also be found on our social outlets and channels as well as NBC's official site.

The Both of Us

"The Both of Us"  When this project landed on our desks, it was written theatrically and was extremely dialog heavy, which posed some challenges. We had a crash-course of learn-as-you-go with how to take something that was so dialogue driven and translate it into something that would be mostly visual. “The Both of Us”  is based on a story written by Mirae Lee and adapted by Jennifer Kim and Carol K. Ras- of Cool Town Creations.

Crush - A Stop-Mo-Toon

"Crush"  is our first short shot entirely in chroma-key. It was animated against a green screen. The sets were built, dressed and shot as plates - digitized and layered in post production to achieve this very unique look we've coined: StopCART-Motion™ or StopMoToon™ , which is a hybrid, mixed medium animation - predominately 3 Dimensional Animation (Stop-Motion) and 2 Dimensional Animation (Cartoon-esque/Digital Rendering). It was totally experimental and ambitious, all for exploring innovative visual aesthetics - used to create a very specific atmosphere, intended to not only support a storyline, but to create a world that may otherwise not come to fruition as envisioned or realized, but only when cross-polinating formats and platforms.

Another major part of the birth of StopCART-Motion™ or StopMoToon™ is that we had set pieces and characters all in different sizes and scales - we were a bit bummed about the possibility of them not ever being used again unless, of course, we decided to continue creating puppets and sets at that particular scale. So, in using this technique, we’re able to reuse a lot of our characters, sets and props because, essentially, they would never be shot together - even if they’re in the same scenes. This is truly an exciting discovery for us - it allowed us to expand our creativity and is a technique we plan to implement in future projects.
